before i was a marauders fan i was a massive golden trio fan. i still am. the relationship between harry, ron, and hermione is SO important to me. they are so codependent and they love each other so much. that being said: can fic writers STOP giving hermione all of ron's good traits??? i am tired.

thinking about sirius and lily finding the siblings that they lost in each other. sirius losing his younger brother and lily her older sister. both of them gaining a new perspective about what it must have been like to be the other sibling. sirius having a sister for the first time and lily a brother. sirius teasing lily about being a few months older than her—sirius having a younger sibling again and lily an older one.
thinking about sirius losing his baby brother for good. thinking about petunia suffering that same pain when she loses lily.

As much as I don't agree with the Dumbledore is the reason for everything that is wrong in the world trope — we have to agree that wizarding world failed both Voldemort and Harry. And Dumbledore had a hand in it; and things could have gone a lot different if, say some different choices were made by some people in power who decided to not do anything.
See, we all agree Dumbledore is not a god, nor could he have helped everyone. We can agree that we don't know much about his and Tom's relationship so we can't really talk about that. But, what we can talk about is his and Harry's relationship. This man left him, a child at the door of a family that hated the word "magic". And worse part is, even after knowing they don't like him — he still insisted that Harry returned to them without even trying to check on him. And the horrible, horrible thing about that is; Dumbledore could have — checked on harry or made someone else do it, in the 11 years of his life. And even more horrible than that is he did make someone check on him, he knew Harry wasn't treated right and he just did not care enough.
He might have created an elaborate plan to make sure Harry survived, but he also made an elaborate plan to make sure Harry doesn't have any self-esteem left when he does.

Sometimes I forget how many of my mutuals don't like my favorite character. Until I see this on my dash, and then I remember:
Tumblr media
Anyway, I'm not going to reblog and argue with people on a correctly tagged post that was clearly not meant for Regulus fans. But I don't think Sirius & Regulus had a relationship similar to Harry & Dudley.
Sirius & Regulus had a scapegoat and golden child dynamic, I've said that before. But I tend to think this came later, as a response to Sirius's rebellion. He was treated badly by their parents and Regulus was seen as "a much better son" because Sirius refused to be what they expected. With Harry, the mistreatment started the moment he arrived on their doorstep, for no other reason than because he was Lily's son and a wizard.
Harry was never treated like family. He slept in the cupboard under the stairs while Dudley had two bedrooms, was made to work hard while Dudley seemingly did no chores at all, and was given only the basic necessities while Dudley was spoiled rotten. So this creates, from day one, a huge divide between them. Dudley was probably encouraged in bullying Harry, and would've been strongly discouraged from trying to befriend him or treating him like an equal.
There's no evidence that Sirius and Regulus were treated so differently as young children. It's noted in Deathly Hallows that their bedrooms were very similar, except the decor and the fact that Sirius's was a bit larger - quite different from Dudley's two bedrooms and Harry's cupboard under the stairs. With Sirius being the oldest boy in his generation from a family that cared a lot about surnames and bloodlines, they probably had high expectations for him and, initially, would've favored him - until he made it clear he wasn't going to go along with their crap.
Before he started school, I think they would have been more accepting of his rebellious nature, assuming he would turn out similar to Walburga and Bellatrix, who are certainly not meek or submissive but remain in line with the family's values. But then, of course, Sirius ended up in Gryffindor - which I also think is when he started developing ideas about pure-bloods not being superior, etc., after spending time away from the family and meeting people like Lily and Remus. So their favoritism towards Regulus probably began with Sirius's Sorting, and really solidified once Regulus started school and went to Slytherin.
Sirius ran away when he was "about sixteen" - I usually go for Christmas of his fifth year, since that would be just after his sixteenth birthday, but it could probably be anywhere from the summer before (almost sixteen) to the summer after (almost seventeen). So it was about 4-5 years between when Sirius lost their parents' favor and when he left home for the last time.
This is the time period when I think they were really pitted against each other the most. And I'm not saying Regulus was totally innocent in this, but I do tend to think there's something to it that doesn't exist in Harry & Dudley's relationship: a feeling of being in a precarious position. As the younger and previously overlooked son, suddenly the parents' favorite, watching his older brother fall from grace, I think he would have been very aware that the same could happen to him. The tables could turn, easily, because their parents' love was not unconditional. So I imagine him trying very hard to prevent that from happening, to live up to their expectations - and that would probably have led to hostility between himself and Sirius, but it's a very different dynamic than Dudley picking on Harry just because he knew he could get away with it.
If we're going to compare with Harry & Dudley, it's also worth mentioning, Dudley's behavior toward Harry included some pretty awful physical abuse. They didn't just argue, Dudley actually beat Harry up, sometimes with a bunch of his friends there to help him. There's no indication that Regulus was doing this to Sirius, or the magical equivalent of hexing him at any opportunity. When Sirius talked about Regulus, he never said he was violent or abusive, only that he was "soft enough to believe" what they were taught by the family. It was more of an ideological divide than anything else - one that culminated in both of them joining opposite sides of the war.
They're just very different situations, very different dynamics. I don't think it's fair to compare them. And I do think the Black brothers' relationship was much more complex than Harry & Dudley's, at least pre-DH.

EVERYONE ACT NORMAL.
The cupboard under the stairs. Harry Potter inspired build. There's a small room (i mean bed) hiding behind the bookshelf and for fun I added the actual cupboard furniture as a wall between this and the kitchen.
Tumblr media
I was trying to make multiple rooms again with the partitions and the stairs were very annoying, this made me think of le HP fandom so just imagine this is num 4 surrey.
Included are:
- Harry's Cupboard
- Living room
- Dining and Kitchen. Only 3 seats coz the dursleys are only 3 people.
- Added seete(a)
- Dudley's room with the latest gadgets and a stuff bear he knows Harry liked (envies).
- The main couples bedroom at top.
Easter egg: Find petunia!!!
--- Goodeve. Close all doors, floos and wards for the snatchers and death eaters are out to play.

Love it how the Marauders fandom can forgive almost everything and redeem almost everyone but not abusive parents/guardians.

a haunted house
Somewhere along Privet Drive there is a house. It appears to be a very normal house. The bushes are always trimmed neatly and there's a lovely begonia bush out back. The stone path is well worn and the shutters are painted a lovely shade of brown.
The insides also appear to be very normal. The kitchen is well-loved down to the cracked coffee mug that collects dust in the cabinet. The floor is scratched around the table from the chairs scraping. There are three bedrooms each one with a bed and dresser. The carpet is worn down in familiar paths and one of the steps on the staircase creaks.
At first glance, there is a house on privet drive no different than any other house. Indistinguishable from it's neighbors, the house sits unperturbed. Upon closer inspection though, one may start to notice it's oddities.
The begonia in the backyard blooms all year, even in the winter months, and the shrubs never seem to need tending. There are divets in the stone around one of the upstairs windows, as if something had been screwed in around it. The shutters even, at times, seem to droop giving the house a dreary expression.
Inside, there are three locks on the cupboard under the stairs. The cupboard itself houses a small cot, a collection of green army soldiers, and a long-dead torch, all covered in a thick layer of dust. One of the bedrooms upstairs is plainer than the rest, not as many posters hung up on the walls but the ones that are don't seem to come down. There are nails in the walls where pictures once hung.
It's just a house, Dudley thinks when he returns years later. He sits in that cupboard under the stairs with all its locks on the door and repeats this to himself. It's just a house and he was just a child. They both were.

I'd say I did nothing productive today but I think the five hours I spent drawing up an organized version of the Black family tree that branches off and includes the Potter, weasleys, longbottoms, love goods, etc, was very productive of me
